How do light bulbs work?

Light bulbs use different technologies to generate light not just heating a filament.Don Klipstein's Web Site provides all the basics for each type of bulb.

What about Color?

Color is very important to the way we act and feel. We see color in objects only if the object can reflect light in certain wave lengths.The light source must also have the color to be reflected. What about color temperature?

The TV folks spend a lot of time recreating color. Color temperature is also one of their topics.Sylvania also discusses color temperatures of various light sources. Seeing is believing and if you can see color you can demonstrate the differences.The basic concept is illustrated with a Java based tutorial. Note you must have Java enabled to use this.

Where do I find definitions of lighting terms?

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY has a great lighting curriculum that brings industry, science and educators together. Their definition of terms is probably one of the most comprehensive lists to be found. The Lighting Research Center also has selected terms with greater explanation.
